Are Dog Shock Collars Safe? What Every Pet Owner Should Know

Thinking about using a shock collar for your dog? With new regulations coming into effect in Ireland, here's what you need to know about these devices and safer alternatives or durable dog collars for training your pet.

What Are Shock Collars?

Shock collars or ‘e-collars’ are marketed for training your dog by electric stimulation delivered via contact points on your dog's neck. In recent years, however, the training safety and the effectiveness of shock collars have come under criticism by the general public and professionally trained dog handlers.

  • The most common types of shock collars are:
  • Remote training collars.
  • Anti-bark collars.
  • Invisible fencing systems.

Ireland's New Ban: What's Changed

After public consultation, Ireland's legislation introduced a ban in 2024 concerning the use of remotely controlled shock collars. This further establishes the value of public sentiment concerning dog welfare.

What’s been banned:

  • Training with hand-held remote shock collars

What’s permissible:

  • Anti-bark collars
  • Remote electronic perimeter fences
  • Use on deaf dogs

If you possess a remote shock collar, you may keep using it on your pets but you will have to register within three months using your dog’s microchip ID and licence number. You will not be able use it on any new dogs in the future.

Why Shock Collars Are a Concern

The concern with shock collars is more than immediate discomfort. Studies indicate the potential of these devices to inflict more enduring damage to the dog’s well-being and behaviour.

Physical risks:

  • Irritation and abrasions of the skin
  • Stress burns and health issues
  • Collars can trigger and sustain anxiety in dogs even when not wearing the collar. They learn to anticipate suffering and painful stimuli, causing a disproportionate anxiety response to everyday situations.

Behavioural problems:

  • Some dogs start to show collar smart behaviours (they behave only while the collar is being worn).
  • Instead of solving aggression issues, it can escalate them.
  • Results in a lack of understanding when the timing of corrections is off.
  • Creates a disconnect between both of you.

The main problem with shock collars is that they don't actually teach your dog why a particular behaviour is wrong. They teach the dog to avoid a particular behaviour by focusing on the discomfort of the collar, rather than actually educating the dog.

Better Training Alternatives

When your dog associates good behaviour with treats, praise, or play, they're more likely to repeat it willingly. This creates a happier, more confident dog and strengthens your bond.

For specific challenges:

  • Work with trainers who have experience with reward-based training.
  • For serious issues, consult with a qualified behaviourist.
  • Obtain a custom training plan that caters to your dog's personality and needs.

For teaching recall, which is usually the reason for shock collars, consistent positive reinforcement training works better in the long term. Start in a safe, closed area with high-value treats and slowly move to a more distracting area.

Keeping Your Dog Safe Without Shock Collars

If you're concerned about keeping your dog contained, there are effective options available. Although it requires some initial cost, traditional fencing remains the most reliable solution.

For boundary control, supervised outdoor time with leads provides complete control. Long slip leads for dogs allow freedom; however, you can still control the dog while working on recall training.

Quality equipment makes a difference:

  • Well-fitted harnesses distribute pressure evenly
  • Comfortable leads make walks enjoyable for both the dog and the owner
  • Gear that prevents pulling and escape attempts

We focus on the safety and comfort of your dog during training walks with our comfortable harnesses and leads. This makes training walks easier and more effective.

Making the Right Choice

The new regulations indicate a more humane and effective practice in dog training. This will not only help your dog but also strengthen your bond.

There are also effective alternatives that focus on your pet’s well-being, whether you are training a new puppy or an older dog that has had a tough experience with training.  Your dog deserves training that isn’t uncomfortable or scary.
